Autumn Solace
Things have been slow around Kotonoha lately due to everyone being busy with what is often referred to as RL (now if only we could shorten those daily duties the same way we abbreviate words). However, all is not completely lost yet as some of us are still willing to sacrifice our precious spare time to work on Asian comics. Don’t believe us? Well, let’s see what we’ve got for you today:
Firstly, we are proud to present a rare treat in form of an all-color comic by manga-ka extraordinaire Kei Tôme (Lament of the Lamb, Sing Yesterday for Me, LUNO etc.): Fuguruma Memories is a gorgeously illustrated and wonderfully told fantasy story about the power of memories and what they mean to us. Never mind the fact that the storytellers are objects. If you like melancholic, yet soothing stories with a good portion of unsentimental nostalgia, this manga will surely appeal to you. Have I mentioned that it’s completely in color (well, except for the final chapter)? Yep, that’s not something you encounter everyday.
While not in color, the rest of today’s releases is not to be sniffed at either:
The second chapter of Yûnagi no machi; Sakura no kuni is set 32 years after the events of the first one. We are introduced to Nanami, a cheerful and energetic girl who seems to have her whole future ahead of her. Only slowly do we learn about the connection between her and Minami and how this young girl’s fate is also bound to the terrible event of 1945 whose aftermath seems to reach into today.
The seventh chapter of Soil concludes the first volume of this nail-biting crime thriller. If you think the story so far is mysterious and suspenseful, you don’t want to miss the second volume (and the third one) as Atsushi Kaneko will take the plot to a new level. The more secrets and lies the author unveils, the deeper the mystery grows. Starting from the second volume the pace accelerates like an avalanche, yet there’s still no telling where the story might end.
Finally, we have more sex and drama in the form of Uncivilized Planet. The sixth chapter marks the end of volume one. One more to go.
Oh, wait! I almost forgot that we have a new 1-shot as well: Idiot!. As much as I’d like to explain what the story is about, I think you have to read it to understand (or not, depending on how receptive you are to nonsensical gags that one laughs about even though one doesn’t know why).
