New One-Shot Samples
A quick note to all potential J-E translator applicants: I have updated our 1-shot sample page with a few new stories that might be of some interest for you. Highlights include:
- Frog in a Bottle by Mitsuru TANIFUJI (the latest Afternoon Shiki Prize winner; a very sweet story with beautiful and realistic artwork)
- Happiness by Wataru YOSHIZUMI (a two-part romance story from the creator of Marmalade Boy featuring adult characters. Those who are familiar with her works will know that that doesn’t happen often ;))
- The Secret of Chimneys by Nanae HARUNO (a manga adaptation of Agatha Christie’s detective novel. Ever wondered how her characters would look like in a manga? Here’s your chance.)
- The Tempest by Nanae HARUNO (another manga adaptation of a famous dramatic work by Nanae Haruno. This time, it’s William Shakespeare’s fantastical play of the same title.)
There are more interesting stories on the site. Feel free to take a look around and ask for more scans if one of them catches your interest. If you’d like to translate one story, please take time to translate a few pages of it and send the script to kotonoha @ gmx.net. Thank you.
I’m truly curious about Happiness, being a tremendous Wataru Yoshizumi fan ever since Minto na Bokura…

I am very interested in reading Happiness because it is Yoshizumi Wataru’s first josei manga and doinkies is interested to know how she handled that transition from shoujo to josei (although she still is doing a shoujo series for Ribon Original right now called Baby It’s You).
I also am looking forward to The Tempest. That was always one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and as far as Haruno Nanae goes, the only work of hers that I’ve read is Pieta, which was great. But I think my translation skills would be a bit doinky for those two since they probably don’t use furigana.
